TREFFPUNKT 2016
„Sparkling diamonds“

An interdisciplinary contemporary art event, melted round table and audiovisual concert with new pieces by young composers. Start at 17.30 – ending approximately at 20.00. The idea of „Treffpunkt“ is to offer a meeting place or space and informal communication environment for the students of three higher education institutions and chosen schools awarded pupils together with the audience.

The German word „Treffpunkt“ means in English „meeting place“ or „meeting space“ and is inspired by the title of a piece from a cycle (1968 „Aus den sieben Tagen“ – From the Seven Days) for intuitive music ensemble by one of the most important avantgarde composers and future thinker of the 20th century Karlheinz Stockhauseni (1928–2007). The topic of the Spring round table discussion is „Identity“ on all kind of levels: we expect thoughts by the young (and also the experienced) on how it is to be a composer and creative artist, its possibilities and needs; on the roll of the performer and the listener; how to be a human being in the contemporary society and in future; the roll of creativity and technology; on interdisciplinarity etc etc … The experimentality of this joint event taking as focus the world of thoughts, emotions, aesthetics and digital technology handling skills finds its expression in the idea of the organizers to first time melt the roundtable discussion with the concert in a way that talks and music will be presented alternatingly in the free atmosphere (including round tables) of the café-cinema „Sinilind“. It is our wish that in such an atmosphere composition and audiovisual art students of three estonian education institutions will step into communication with the audience together with contest awarded school pupils – to create in a direct sense a meeting place and forum of ideas.

The concert series Young Composers Lab (YCL) was established 2013 at Tallinn University former Institute of Fine Arts Department of Music (now BFM) within the KIMP festival and in the three first years the creation of students of composition and sound design was introduced. 2014 and further also the winner works of the Digital Composition Contest for school children established by the former department of music are premiered for a larger audicnce. 2015 the YCL in Spring took place in collaboration with the Kumu Art Museum at the Kumu Museum Night (around 3500 visitors) and in Winter of the same year took place a second concert first time with a roundtable discussion (on the topic of future music) with young composers in the TLU BFM SuperNova Cinema as the concert „Exciting World of Sounds“, and this concert took first time place in collaboration with students of the Composition Department and Electronic Music Studio of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT). 2016 this collaboration is again extended, form now on also composition students of the Tartu Heino Eller Music School participate, and this interdisciplinary and interinstitutional now-music event takes place first time in the caffee-cinema „Sinilind“ (Bluebird) with a renewed experimental concept. This is expressed directly in the title TREFFPUNKT, which is accompanied by a poetical or extending subtitle, this year „Sparkling diamonds“, which referes in one part to the Digital Composition Contest Grand Prix winner piece by Charlie Karniol, in the other part it is underlining that all of the presented works are polished gems.

Presented are EAMT Composition Department and Electronic Music Studio as well as Tartu H. Eller Music School students’ audio(visual) (new) works, the new works by the TLU BFM course Basics of Musical Composition, TLU BFM 3rd Digital Composition Contest award winners’ works, TLU BFM course Sound Design short film music as well as the short film premiere by the TLU BFM music teacher master student Olga Savkina with the music of the TLU BFM music bachelor 3rd year student and contest „Eesti laul“ 2016 half-final participant Joonas Alvre.

Beside the young composers themselves we await among the Audience primarily contemporary music and art young interesents and professionals, but also culturally educated people with different background, as well as the guests of the café „Sinilind“, who are curios to meet with the thinking world and avantgarde creations of the youth.
